Textiles add a beautiful, festive, and comforting touch to interiors and this is exactly what we had in mind when we decided to introduce hand washable ikat table runners to our collection. Textiles make our lives cozy. On top of that, Uzbek ikat fabrics have festive, almost royal looks because of their rich colors and bold ikat patterns. These are two visual characteristics that differentiate Uzbek ikats from other ethnic artisanal fabrics. Fergana Valley of Uzbekistan is an origin of these fabulous ikat fabrics where to this day they are hand dyed and handloom woven.

Where did inspiration for ikat table runners come from?

COVID-19 lockdown inspired us to introduce ikat table runners to our collection. Sharing meals with our loved became especially meaningful during the COVID isolation and we wanted the dining experience to be extra special. As a rule, table runners are designed to protect tables from spills and the dropping of food. They also have an esthetic function of decorating and creating that chic look. However, a chic appearance should not result in a extra cleaning expenses.

Uzbek ikat table runners are Uzbekistan’s contribution to the art of dining table decoration. We use special textiles that we have – ikats! You can love table runners or hate them but one things is clear – they are essential to creating a beautiful dining table setting.

Historic background: how table runners came to life

Back in the Middle ages, when tablecloth was used only in aristocratic circles, table manners and table etiquette was also limited to the same circles.  Those were the times when eating slowly using silverware was quite a new idea to most people. Tablecloth by now was a table necessity, the ends of which were often used as napkins to wipe mouth and the fingers by unsophisticated masses. By the way, napkins came to existence as a response to women (and men?) getting sick and tired of laundering grease stains off the tablecloths.

The inspiration for this suzani table decor collection came as a response to COVID-19 pandemic or rather our desire to be done with it.

To be done with the media noise, confusion, vaccination debates and illogical, often conflicting, data being fed to us. It was our way of saying “Enough is enough”. Basic precautions like avoiding large crowds remain but the goal is to drop fear and panic, to take charge of our wellbeing and to go on loving and celebrating our relationships.

This ikat table runner is something we have been planning to make for a long time.  We finally got around to making it. The idea was to make something that will go well with a pumpkin pie, cinnamon and nutmeg theme. In other words, in choosing this ikat fabric for a table runner Thanksgiving was already on our mind.

We like to keep things natural

The same is true for this Ikat table runner. We paired handwoven Uzbek Ikat fabric with an unbleached very natural cotton fabric. The goal was to have both fabrics organic, soft and pleasant to touch.
