Uzbek ikat use varies depending on one's interests. We have customers who make them for tailoring dresses or for decorating homes. Before we dive into how Uzbek fabric uses let's start with a definition of Uzbek ikat.

Uzbek ikat fabric is an artisanal textile that is hand dyed and woven on traditional handlooms using a resist-dyeing method. This method of making the fabric is traditional to many regions of Uzbekistan with Margilan being the cradle of ikat fabric production of not only Uzbekistan but the entire Central Asia.  The resulting ikat design patterns and colors are bold and unique to Uzbekistan, making them a popular choice of unique textile among fashion designers and home decorators.

It is important to note that In December 2017 the traditional methods of manufacturing Uzbek ikat fabrics were included in the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding practices. What does this mean? It means that the art of ikat making survived within families overcoming repressions and bans on artisanal ikat making during the Soviet era. The ikat making in Uzbekistan was safeguarded by a small community of descendants of ikat artisans over the generations until the Soviet Union collapsed and it became legal to manufacture ikats in a traditional way. We have a great post talking just about that here.

We prepared several areas where Uzbek ikat fabrics are widely used:

Historic background: how table runners came to life

Back in the Middle ages, when tablecloth was used only in aristocratic circles, table manners and table etiquette was also limited to the same circles.  Those were the times when eating slowly using silverware was quite a new idea to most people. Tablecloth by now was a table necessity, the ends of which were often used as napkins to wipe mouth and the fingers by unsophisticated masses. By the way, napkins came to existence as a response to women (and men?) getting sick and tired of laundering grease stains off the tablecloths.

In the cosmos of pillow covers lumbar pillow covers are just one type which are used widely both for health and decorative purposes. Before we dive into nitty-gritty of lumbar pillow covers let’s first start with a definition of a lumbar pillow.

What is lumbar pillow?

Quoting experts from Everlasting Comfort:

“A lumbar pillow supports the spine by filling the gap between the chair and your lower back. This promotes good posture and supports the natural curve of your back."

In other words, lumbar pillow is something that you place behind your lower back to relieve discomfort associated with extended sitting and to support your back.

Lumbar pillows can be made only for functional purposes and they use as something engineers can do but given that we at UzbekAlive are all about beauty and esthetics we offer amazing lumbar ikat pillow covers to marry function and beauty.
