This hand painted lacquer box is made of paper-mache which is processed to be very durable and to have a smooth surface (versus "wrinkly" surface). The flower stems of the decoration and borders are painted in genuine liquid bronze, which makes the colors more vivid. This was the last touch that was added to the lacquer box before covering it with several layers of lacquer for protection.
