Historic note on this fabric: The fabric was made in August 1992 at then Soviet textile factory in the city of Margilan (there is still a Quality Control tag attached to the fabric). The factory later shut down due to a lack of government financing. Nowadays, fabrics like this cannot be machine woven the way they used to be made. There are small ikat making businesses which can make hand woven fabrics but since we are all humans, there are imperfections inherent to the manual process of weaving.
This is a hand-dyed but machine-woven pure silk ikat atlas fabric. Ikat is a technique of weaving that requires a great amount of precision of tying and dyeing silk yarn in order to achieve a desired pattern. In contrast with adras fabrics which have the same pattern on both sides and either side can be used as a face, this fabric has no pattern on the reverse side.
Width of the fabric is 29.3“ (74.5 cm)
