Bukhara, an ancient city along the Silk Road, has been famous for its golden thread embroidery. Hand embroidered items similar to this one used to be worn only by kings. It is only in the 20th century the embroidered clothes and slippers became available to simple people.

Products embroidered with golden threads are very festive, In Uzbekistan, they are usually worn for special occasions such as weddings.

The base fabric of these slippers is velour.  These particular slippers are embroidered with gold threads and beads.
